Mark Bernstein is a neurosurgeon at Toronto Western Hospital, University Health Network, and Professor of Surgery, University of Toronto. He was the Inaugural Chair holder of the Greg Wilkins-Barrick Chair in International Surgery. He is also a home palliative care physician with the Temmy Latner Center for Palliative Care, Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto.

His main area of clinical focus in neurosurgery is the treatment of patients with brain tumours especially awake craniotomy and pioneered outpatient brain tumour surgery. He is also a dedicated educator, having won numerous teaching awards. He is passionate about helping advance neurosurgery in LMIC’s where he has made about 25 visits to teach inside and outside the operating room, mainly in subsaharan Africa and southeast Asia.

His current research explores various ethical issues and other aspects of the patient experience using qualitative research methodology.

Dr. Bernstein has published over 450 scientific papers and book chapters, a Textbook of Neuro-Oncology (in its 3rd edition), and a book on Bioethics. He is currently working on books on The Future of Neurosurgery and Home Palliative Care. He has also written about 150 non-medical stories, many of which attempt to bridge the gap between the surgeon’s world and the public.
